AI-ready data, explained

It is not a warehouse, a lake, or a platform with a serious name. If the answer lives only in someone’s head, the tool will invent a second version. That version will sound sure.

Gartner has warned that firms go ahead without the data practices AI needs, and then drop the projects. The useful part is the shape of that failure. For the job in front of you, ready means one place. It is current enough that the person doing the job trusts it today.

What counts as ready for a small business?

You can point at the place. A system can read it without anyone retyping it. Someone knows which fields are wrong. If you cannot point at that place, stop the purchase.

Is a shared inbox AI-ready data?

Not if people keep a side copy they trust more. A record is in place when a new person would open that one source, and a system could read it. It is running when a weekly job already depends on it.

Questions

What is AI-ready data in simple terms?

It is one current source for the job you want done, in a form a system can read, with someone who knows which fields are wrong.

Do I need a data lake first?

No. A lake is not the requirement. If you cannot name the one place the facts live, a new store will only add a second guess.

Why do projects fail without it?

The tool treats scattered facts as if they lived in one place. Gartner ties dropped AI projects to that gap, along with weak controls, rising cost, and unclear value.
