Search engine optimization (SEO), explained
Google’s starter guide says you build a site for people. A search engine is one of those people. SEO is the work that comes after the basics. Those basics make a page able to appear. SEO works on how the site shows up in search.
The same guide says there is no secret that puts a site first. The useful work is easier crawling, clearer pages, and a page worth opening. Google also says those basics still apply when an AI answer quotes a page.
Is SEO different from answer engine work?
Google says no. Its guide treats answer engine work and generative engine work as SEO. The page still has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. A second program with a new name is not what the guide describes.
Does SEO guarantee the top spot?
No. Google says there is no trick that ranks a site first. SEO makes it easier to crawl, index, and understand the page. Whether someone clicks is a separate question.
Questions
What is SEO in simple terms?
SEO is the work of helping search engines understand your pages, so people can find them in search and choose to visit.
Is SEO still useful when AI writes the answer?
Yes. Google says its AI features on Search still rest on the same ranking and quality systems. A page that fails the basics will not be the one an answer quotes.
Do I need a separate program for AI search?
Google says you do not. The guide says the new names are still SEO. It also says Google does not use a special file such as llms.txt.
