AI citation, explained
Answer tools such as Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google’s AI features write a reply, then point to the pages they used. Perplexity says each answer includes numbered citations that link to the original sources. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode show links to supporting websites.
For a business, a citation means an AI tool used your page as a source. But a reader may get what they need from the answer and never click. Pew found that people clicked result links less often when Google showed an AI summary. So we track citations and clicks as two different things.
How does a page get cited by an AI tool?
The tool has to be able to reach and read the page. For Google, the page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet, and Google says there are no extra technical rules for AI Overviews or AI Mode. After that, a page that answers a real question in plain words gives any answer tool something worth quoting.
Is an AI citation the same as a click?
No. A citation shows your page as a source. A click is when someone opens it. A person can read the answer, see your name and move on without visiting.
