A classic search engine gives you a ranked list of pages to open. An answer engine reads pages for you and writes a short reply. Perplexity says it searches the web in real time, sums up what it finds and adds numbered citations that link to the original sources.
Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as AI-powered responses with links to supporting websites. It says the usual SEO basics apply to them. On this site we use answer engine as the plain name for this kind of tool.
How is an answer engine different from a search engine?
A search engine mainly returns a list of links for you to open and compare. An answer engine writes the answer first and shows its sources beside it. Many tools now do both, so the line is blurry.
How does a business show up in an answer engine?
The tool has to be able to find and read your pages, so its crawler must be allowed in. Then the page needs a clear, honest answer to a real question. For Google, the page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet.
