AI Overviews, explained

Google’s guide for site owners names AI Overviews and AI Mode as generative features on Search. They pull from the same index as regular results. There is no special file and no special schema that buys a place in them.

Search Console counts much of that traffic inside the Web search type, so the main report will not always split it out. A separate Generative AI features report is how we look at that slice. Seeing the summary is not the same as getting the click.

How does a page get into an AI Overview?

Google says the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. The same SEO basics apply. A thin page, or a page blocked from snippets, will not become a source because someone added a new file.

Can I see AI Overview traffic on its own?

Google says clicks and views from AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the Web search type in the Performance report. That report will not split them out by itself. Use the Generative AI features report when you need that slice.
